Cancer Treatment in Kenya: How Physiotherapy Can Help You Rebuild Strength and Function
A cancer diagnosis can change everything.
Suddenly, ordinary activities—walking across a room, climbing stairs, preparing a meal or going to work—may require more effort. Treatment can bring fatigue, muscle weakness, pain, reduced mobility and uncertainty about the future.
For families, watching someone you love struggle can be equally difficult. You may want to help but feel unsure what to say or do.
Cancer care is not only about treating the disease. It is also about helping the person live as well as possible throughout treatment and recovery.
Cancer treatment involves more than medication and surgery
Cancer treatment depends on the type and stage of cancer and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy or other specialist interventions.
These decisions belong to the patient’s oncology team.
However, cancer and its treatment can affect physical function, independence and quality of life. The World Health Organization recognises rehabilitation as an important component of cancer care. Appropriate rehabilitation can help people maintain or improve their ability to move, perform daily activities and participate in family and working life.
This is where Physiotherapy and cancer rehabilitation make a meaningful contribution.
How can Physiotherapy help someone living with cancer?
When appropriate for the person’s condition and treatment plan, an individualised programme may help address:
- Cancer-related fatigue: Carefully graded activity to support physical capacity without unnecessary overexertion.
- Muscle weakness and deconditioning: Appropriate resistance training to maintain or rebuild muscle strength.
- Reduced mobility: Functional training to help with walking, transfers, stairs and everyday activities.
- Balance and coordination difficulties: Targeted exercises where indicated to improve movement safety.
- Reduced exercise tolerance: Guided aerobic training and cardiorespiratory conditioning when medically appropriate.
- Recovery after surgery: Rehabilitation to address relevant movement restrictions and functional limitations, following surgical guidance.
Exercise also supports mood, sleep and quality of life. Evidence indicates that physical activity is beneficial for many people before, during and after cancer treatment, but the programme must reflect the person’s specific medical circumstances.
The goal is not to push someone into an intense FITNESS or performance training programme.
It is to help them do as much as is appropriate, safely and progressively.
Safety comes first
Cancer rehabilitation is not a one-size-fits-all service.
Exercise selection may need modification because of recent surgery, bone metastases, low blood counts, infection risk, severe fatigue, heart or lung complications, neuropathy, balance problems or treatment-related side effects.
The oncology team must remain central to clinical decision-making.
Before starting or changing an exercise programme, the patient should discuss their plans with their treating doctor or oncology team. A Physiotherapist can then assess relevant functional limitations, follow medical precautions and develop an appropriate rehabilitation plan within their professional scope.
Exercise should be postponed or modified when the patient’s clinical status makes it unsafe. New chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, fever during cancer treatment or other urgent warning signs require prompt medical assessment rather than exercise.
Nutrition support should also be coordinated appropriately. A qualified nutritionist or oncology dietitian can help address nutritional needs, while a psychologist or other mental-health professional may provide support for emotional distress.
No exercise programme should be promoted as a cure for cancer or as a replacement for evidence-based oncology treatment.
How NBOFITNESS Human Performance Institute can help
At NBOFITNESS Human Performance Institute, we build bodies that work.
Our approach draws on physical assessment and human-performance expertise, including the capabilities outlined on our Diagnostic Tests page.
Our specific role is to provide suitable clients with Physiotherapy, functional assessment and individualised exercise-based rehabilitation to support physical function, mobility, strength and activity tolerance during or after cancer treatment, when appropriate and consistent with the treating team’s advice.
Depending on the person’s condition and goals, support may include:
- Reviewing current mobility, functional limitations and exercise readiness.
- Developing a conservative, individualised physical therapy plan.
- Guided mobility, functional and strength exercises.
- Gradual aerobic training where clinically appropriate.
- Progress reviews based on movement, daily function and tolerance.
- Home-based Physiotherapy in Nairobi for suitable clients, subject to service arrangements and clinical suitability.
Our diagnostic and performance assessment capabilities can help inform an understanding of physical function, but they do not diagnose cancer, determine cancer stage or replace oncology investigations.
NBOFITNESS does not provide cancer diagnosis, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, cancer surgery or oncology prescribing. Our Physiotherapy services complement—not replace—specialist cancer treatment.
Your pathway to support in Kenya
If you or someone you love is living with cancer, a practical next step is to:
1. Speak with the oncology team. Ask whether Physiotherapy or exercise-based rehabilitation is appropriate at this stage of treatment.
2. Contact NBOFITNESS. Explain the person’s treatment stage, functional difficulties, goals and any restrictions provided by the treating team.
3. Arrange a suitability assessment. If appropriate, a personalised rehabilitation plan can be developed around the person’s needs and medical precautions.
4. Progress with ongoing clinical coordination. Review the programme as symptoms, treatment and functional capacity change, and refer back to the treating team when concerns arise.
The NBOFITNESS Human Performance Institute is available to everyone. Home-based services may be arranged in Nairobi for suitable clients; people elsewhere in Kenya should confirm service availability when making an enquiry.
