Parkinson’s Disease Treatment in Kenya

Parkinson’s Disease Treatment in Kenya: How Physiotherapy Can Help You Keep Moving

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement. Symptoms may include tremors, muscle stiffness, slowed movement, changes in posture, balance difficulties and freezing while walking. Some people also experience sleep problems, constipation, anxiety or depression.

These changes can make dressing, bathing, walking, working and participating in family life increasingly difficult. But a diagnosis does not mean a person should stop pursuing independence or meaningful goals.

There is currently no cure for Parkinson’s disease, but medical management, medication and supportive therapies—including Physiotherapy—can help manage symptoms and maintain quality of life.

How can Physiotherapy help Parkinson’s disease in Kenya?

Physiotherapy is not a cure for Parkinson’s disease; it is a practical way to address movement problems and support everyday function.

At NBOFITNESS Human Performance Institute, our role is to help suitable clients work towards personalised physical goals through assessment and guided, exercise-based rehabilitation, in coordination with their treating healthcare professionals.

Depending on the person’s needs, medical status and safety, our programme may include:

  • Gait, balance and coordination training: strategies to improve walking, turning, posture and movement confidence while addressing fall risk.
  • Functional training: practising appropriate everyday movements, such as standing from a chair and moving around the home.
  • Strength and mobility exercises: targeted resistance training, flexibility and movement practice to address stiffness, reduced mobility and loss of muscle strength.
  • Aerobic and capacity training: appropriately graded physical activity to support endurance and general fitness.
  • Individualised home exercise: guided physical therapy activities that fit the person’s abilities, living environment and rehabilitation goals.

The Parkinson’s Foundation and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) exercise recommendations cover aerobic activity, strength training, flexibility, balance, agility and multitasking. These are professional guidelines—not a universal exercise prescription. The programme must be adapted to the individual’s symptoms, abilities, medication effects and risk factors.

NBOFITNESS is not a hospital or a substitute for a neurologist. We do not diagnose Parkinson’s disease, prescribe or adjust medication, or claim to reverse neurological damage. Where specialised neurological Physiotherapy is required, we will discuss suitability and the need for an appropriately qualified clinician or referral.

Safety must come first

Before beginning a new physical training or personal training programme, speak to the treating doctor and establish whether exercise is appropriate. Particular care may be needed where there are recurrent falls, dizziness on standing, significant freezing episodes, cognitive difficulties, osteoporosis or other medical conditions.

Do not attempt challenging balance drills, unsupervised resistance training or strenuous performance training if they create a risk of falling or injury. Medication timing can affect movement, so share relevant information with the rehabilitation professional.

A nurse, occupational therapist, speech and language therapist, nutritionist or psychologist may also be needed as part of our wider care team. Swallowing difficulties, speech changes, unexplained weight loss or significant mood changes deserve appropriate clinical attention.

What families and colleagues can do today

Do not mistake slower movement for laziness, tremors for weakness of character, or withdrawal for a lack of interest. Parkinson’s can affect confidence and independence in ways that are not always visible.

If your parent, spouse, friend or colleague is struggling, listen without judgement. Offer to help arrange a medical review, accompany them to an appointment or support them in exploring rehabilitation. At home, reducing clutter, improving lighting and addressing trip hazards may also help reduce fall risks.

People in Nairobi and elsewhere in Kenya should not have to navigate these decisions alone. Work pressures, finance and family responsibilities can delay care, but early discussion of movement difficulties may help people access appropriate support sooner.

How to take the next step with NBOFITNESS

The pathway is straightforward:

  1. Consult the treating doctor or neurologist for diagnosis, medical management and advice on rehabilitation suitability.
  2. Contact NBOFITNESS to discuss Physiotherapy services, the person’s functional difficulties and whether our available services are appropriate.
  3. Arrange an assessment where suitable, taking account of the medical team’s advice, movement limitations, balance, coordination and personal goals.
  4. Agree on an individualised plan with clear functional objectives, appropriate supervision and referral to specialist services when necessary.

Home-based support in Nairobi may be explored subject to availability and clinical suitability. If you live elsewhere in Kenya, contact us to confirm whether an appropriate service can be arranged.

Whether someone lives in Nairobi, another part of Kenya or elsewhere in East Africa, the principle remains the same: rehabilitation should be individualised, evidence-informed and safe—not copied from a generic FITNESS programme. Fat loss, body recomp and body recompositioning may be relevant to some people’s wider health goals, but they are not the primary objectives of Parkinson’s rehabilitation unless clinically appropriate.

Do not let someone you care about become part of the mass of men that lead lives of quiet desperation simply because asking for help feels difficult. A conversation, a medical review and a suitable rehabilitation plan can be meaningful steps towards preserving movement, dignity and participation in everyday life.

Yes, NBOFITNESS can help you explore an appropriate Physiotherapy pathway—and NAIROBI FITNESS CONSULTING is here to help you take that first step.
